Postdoctoral Research and Clinical Fellow, Department of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Background and research interests:
Maria earned her medical degree from Athens Medical School in 2021. During her medical studies, Maria studied biological aging in the model organism of Drosophila melanogaster, demonstrating cognitive and motor decline in a longitudinal study. After her graduation, she joined the Cardiology Department at Johns Hopkins University SOM, where she focused on cardiovascular genetics. From GWAS studies to phenotype, she demonstrated the impact of a novel gene, REST, in coronary artery disease. She has recently joined the Newby Lab, where her work focuses on designing prime editing techniques for treating dilated cardiomyopathies. During her postdoctoral fellowship, Maria was awarded The W. Leigh Thompson Excellence in Research Award for her research findings on coronary artery disease.
